Because of my History of Horror and Sci Fi film class back at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1991, I did some digging into Edgar Rice Burroughs and what I found was not very good. Yes he became a prolific Sci Fi writer, but his stories were rooted in some of the most racist mindset I have ever seen. I put it all in context considering the racial climate of the time but he does not get a pass.
Last year, the cereal brand Cheerios released a commercial that featured an interracial couple and their biracial daughter. The racist backlash against seeing a black man with a white woman was so severe that Cheerios had to disable comments on its YouTube account. During the Super Bowl this year, the brand double-downed on its efforts to be reflective of a diverse nation and released a second commercial featuring the same family. In the new ad, the mother is pregnant with the couple’s second child. This commercial was marked with far less backlash.
This post caused a mini firestorm on my Facebook page. I revisited a story from 1996. Remember the young black girl named Keisha Thomas from Ann Arbor, Michigan who with her own body protected a KKK rally supporter from being beaten? Maybe she had just watched an episode of “The Hulk” and figured her body could transform into a gamma radiated being able to withstand, kicks, punches, sticks and stones from enraged protesters. Whatever Thomas’ motivation, her brave act of humanity touched millions and softened the klan organizer’s heart and he thanked her. Ironic.
Aquita shares her story: When Lucas and I first met he didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak Spanish. We learned to communicate with each other within about six months. On our first date we went to dinner and smiled the whole entire time as that’s all we could do. As time went on we started using the translation service app and finally learned communicate.
OMGoodness, a friend in the UK sent me this article posted on Essence.com. I could not stop reading. A black woman seeking advice wrote in to Abiola Abrams’ Intimacy Intervention column. Seems the writer’s wonderful, white husband likes to use racial slurs during sex. “Oh baby, nigger bitch, oh baby.” Come again? What the what??? I liked Abrams’ answer to the sad advice seeker and if she were real, I would hope she took the advice. I felt little sympathy for this sister as she did not know how to vet. Any woman who would put up with such from any man has some esteem and other issues. I don’t want to go a rant but, why anyone would allow and actually like this kind of behavior, treatment or talk is beyond me. That is the excuse the carefully crafted, deep seated racist author gave the writer Where is the self respect? I when I read this post, I couldn’t help but picture Django Chained.
White DBRs Are In Great Supply
Black women who advocate for other black women to expand their dating pools to include all races are often accused of bashing black men; as some are quick to apply the DBR (damaged beyond repair) label to them. No one claims that all black men are dbrs. That would be unfair as there are some great black men out there. On the other hand, if the shoe fits……
